Pot and Weed
The “pot” (pronounced pote) has been used mainly in the United States since the 1960s, but also nowadays in Canadian French. Its origin is linked to the Spanish word potiguaya which designates a mulled wine in which the heads of weed have been soaked.
The word “weed” is more recent, and became popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although it also refers to weeds that grow anywhere and often in difficult conditions (a comparison that goes well to cannabis, this plant growing all around the world, in various natural conditions), it originally referred to cannabis cigarettes, before being assimilated to the plant itself.
The word beuh appeared in France in the 80s, under the influence of verlan which transformed grass into weed (or beu). The word officially entered the dictionary in 2015, along with selfie and bitcoin.
